Hiking & Waterfalls
Appalachian Trail
The AT's southern terminus is at Springer Mountain, about 20 miles south of Dahlonega. Day hike to the summit for sweeping Blue Ridge views — it's the iconic starting point for every northbound thru-hiker.
Amicalola Falls
At 729 feet, Amicalola Falls State Park is home to the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi. Just 18 miles from Dahlonega — a must-do on any visit.
Blood Mountain
The highest peak on the Georgia AT at 4,458 feet. The 4.4-mile round-trip hike rewards with panoramic views across the Blue Ridge. Best in fall when the trees turn.
Helton Creek Falls
A short easy trail leads to a double waterfall hidden in the forest. One of North Georgia's most beautiful — and least crowded — waterfall hikes.
Desoto Falls
Two stunning waterfalls — upper and lower — accessible via a 2.2-mile loop in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Perfect for a morning hike before afternoon wine tasting.
Wine & Hike Combo
Many hikers pair a morning trail with afternoon winery visits — North Georgia's compact wine trail means you can visit 3–4 wineries in an afternoon without doubling back.
Historic Downtown & Town Square

Dahlonega's historic square is anchored by the 1836 Price Memorial Hall — gold-leafed on the outside, using gold from local mines. Surrounding the square you'll find boutique shops, artisan galleries, craft breweries, wine bars, and some of North Georgia's best restaurants.
- → Dahlonega Brewing Company — local craft beer with mountain views
- → Downtown galleries and gold-themed boutiques
- → The University of North Georgia — adds life and a farmers market
- → Annual Gold Rush Days festival (October) — the biggest event of the year
