Getting to Dahlonega

65 miles from Atlanta — a scenic mountain drive that's half the fun.

Arrival map

Atlanta sets up the Dahlonega arrival.

This map shows the main arrival choices before the rest of the trip gets locked in. Atlanta is the primary approach to compare first. Gainesville is the helpful backup or add-on choice. The lines are planning corridors, not turn-by-turn road geometry, so use live directions before you drive.

  • Tap a marker to see how each town fits the drive.
  • Solid line is the main approach; dashed lines are alternate regional approaches.

From Atlanta

The most common route: Take GA-400 North from I-285 (the perimeter). After Cumming and the North Georgia Premium Outlets, the highway narrows into two choices and begins climbing into the mountains. You'll pass through Dawsonville before reaching Dahlonega — a drive that gets noticeably prettier the further north you go.

  • GA-400 N from Atlanta · ~1 hr 20 min without traffic
  • Atlanta traffic adds 30–60 min on Friday afternoons
  • The stretch above Dawsonville is scenic and winding — enjoy it
  • Dahlonega is the last town before roads get really mountainous

Parking in Dahlonega

Parking is free in most of Dahlonega — the town has a large free lot just off the square. On fall weekends and during Gold Rush Days (October), it fills early. Arrive before 10am or walk from a parking area on the edge of town.
